What is Ideal Weight?

Ideal body weight is a target weight range associated with good health outcomes for a given height and sex. Unlike BMI which works backwards from your current weight, ideal weight formulas give you a target to aim for. There is no single universally agreed formula — different methods produce slightly different results, which is why this calculator shows all four major formulas and their average.

The Four Formulas Explained

The Devine formula was originally developed in 1974 for medical dosing calculations and is still widely used in clinical settings. The Robinson formula from 1983 was derived from mortality statistics and tends to give slightly lower estimates. The Miller formula from 1983 gives the most generous estimates and is considered more appropriate for larger-framed individuals. The Hamwi formula is commonly used by dietitians and gives results close to the Devine formula.

How to Use Your Result

The average of the four formulas gives you a realistic target range. Rather than aiming for a single number, think of your ideal weight as a range of roughly plus or minus 5 percent around the average. Body frame size, muscle mass, and age all influence what weight is truly ideal for you as an individual. Use this alongside our BMI Calculator and Body Fat Calculator for the most complete picture of your healthy weight range.

Ideal Weight Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

How is ideal weight calculated?

This calculator uses four established clinical formulas: Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964). Each was developed for medical settings to estimate healthy weight from height. The average of all four provides a reliable target range rather than a single fixed number.

Is there one perfect ideal weight?

No. Ideal weight formulas provide a reference range based on height and sex but do not account for body composition, muscle mass, bone density or ethnicity. Two people at the same height can be healthy at different weights. Use ideal weight as a general guide alongside BMI and body fat percentage.

What is the Devine formula for ideal weight?

The Devine formula was published in 1974 to calculate drug dosages based on body weight. For men: ideal weight (kg) = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches above 5 feet). For women: ideal weight (kg) = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches above 5 feet).
